Additional information: Institutional History

  • Leiden University (abbreviated as LEI; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden), located in the city of Leiden, is the oldest university in the Netherlands. The university was founded in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange, leader of the Dutch Revolt in the Eighty Years’ War. The Dutch Royal Family and Leiden University still have a close relationship; Queens Juliana and Beatrix and King Willem-Alexander are all former students.

Additional information: Tuition Fees

Students who are nationals of countries outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Suriname pay higher fees. This is because the government does not subsidise non-EU students, so universities must determine the tuition fees for these students on the basis of costs. Leiden University determines the fees each year for each programme.
