A number of other publications and organizations publish annual rankings of universities and specific programs such as MBAs. The most useful for research and decision-making are:

Times of Higher Education World University Rankings

Times of Higher Education World Reputation Rankings

QS University Ranking

US News and World Report (again, very US centric except for the “Best Global Universities” ranking)

Best College Reviews (US centric and focused on online programs)


The GPA Ranking exists to offer a more ‘perceptive’ approach to ranking universities. Also, the GPA Ranking does not provide a ranking number but rather a list of 50 top universities classified by Tier 1, 2 and 3. For instance, the THE rank #50 is given to University of Wisconsin-Madison in accordance to the THE methodology. The problem is that graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison has little meaning outside the United States, and even in the United States, this particular institution lacks name recognition. THE gives rank #35 to this same institution for World Reputation, but again, this is not reflected by actual name recognition among the general public, employers and government leaders outside the United States…
