There are several universities using “Geneva” in the name, in part because of the immediate name recognition and reputation effect associated with the Swiss city. Geneva is a major international center owing to the presence of many international organizations including the United Nations. The University of Geneva is the original university, established in 1559 by the Christian Protestant reformer John Calvin. At least 40% of the students come from foreign countries.

The University of Geneva is – like all Swiss Universities – a public institution. The fees for one semester amount to 500 CHF plus an administration fee of 65 CHF.
Students registering through an exchange program between their home university and the University of Geneva do not pay any tuition fees.
